1. IRCC does not accept IELTS Online for immigration

Express Entry, PNPs, citizenship — IRCC's designated language tests must be taken in person at an authorized test centre. The immigration pages specify in-person delivery; the remote/online version is rejected. (Cross-checked Oct 2026 against IRCC's language-testing pages and the 2026 designated-test list.)

2. IELTS Online is a real, legitimate test — for the wrong goal

Same content and scoring as the in-person test, speaking examiner over video call, proctored from home, results fast. It is accepted by some universities for admissions and by some non-immigration bodies. It is NOT accepted by IRCC for any immigration purpose — and the UK is the same story: UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre (British Council confirms online/remote tests are rejected). Australia too (Home Affairs accepts in-person only). Selling it is not the scam; booking it for a PR application is.

3. The trap mechanism

The booking flow for IELTS Online looks almost identical to the in-person flow, and it is often cheaper and faster to book. Nothing in the purchase flow asks what you need the result for. The rejection happens months later at document review — typically after you have already received an ITA and are inside the 60-day submission window. A CA$300+ test plus a blown ITA.

4. The cousin traps

  • One Skill Retake — also sold by IDP, also rejected by IRCC for Express Entry (EMPP exception). See our One Skill Retake guide.
  • PTE Academic — Pearson's university test, rejected for immigration; only PTE Core counts. See our PTE Core vs IELTS comparison.
  • CELPIP-General has no online version at all (centre-only by design), and PTE Core is delivered at Pearson test centres only. If a "CELPIP online" or "PTE Core from home" listing ever appears, it is not a real test.

5. Where IELTS Online IS fine

University admissions — each institution decides; many accept it, some do not, so the check is "email your school's admissions office and screenshot the answer." Non-immigration work permits, professional registrations — case by case with the body that asks for proof. The bright line: anything adjudicated by a visa/immigration authority (IRCC, UKVI, Australian Home Affairs) = in person only.

6. The pre-booking checklist

  • 1. IELTS General Training (not Academic) — see our Academic vs GT guide.
  • 2. In person at an authorized centre (not IELTS Online, not at-home).
  • 3. Full four-skill sitting (not One Skill Retake).
  • 4. Test date less than 2 years before application submission — the 2-year validity rule.
  • 5. Your name/ID on the result matches your passport exactly — the silent fifth killer (IRCC returns files for name mismatches).

7. How to verify your sitting after booking

Your confirmation email names the delivery mode; the eTRF/TRF is marked for the format. If you already sat IELTS Online and need immigration, there is no conversion and no appeal path — you re-sit in person.

Before you spend CA$350 on the wrong sitting, run the free diagnostic — it confirms your weakest skill and whether your current test format is even the right one to book. Related: Academic vs General Training, CELPIP vs IELTS.
