The one-paragraph comparison

CELPIP-General is Canadian-made (Paragon Testing, UBC): 100% computer-delivered, about 3 hours, all four sections on one screen, speaking into a microphone across 8 structured tasks, human raters behind the scores. Its scoring maps 1:1 to CLB — a CELPIP 9 is CLB 9, in every section.

IELTS General Training is the global standard (British Council / IDP / Cambridge): paper or computer-delivered, about 2h45m, speaking as a face-to-face (or video) interview with a certified examiner. Its scoring needs a per-skill conversion table — and this is the crux: CLB 9 requires Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0. That 8.0 in Listening trips up more candidates than anything else on the test.

The decision rule: find your weakest skill, then pick the test that's kinder to it

  • Listening is your weak point? Consider CELPIP. IELTS demands 8.0 in Listening for CLB 9 — a full band higher than every other skill. CELPIP asks for a flat 9.
  • You freeze talking to a screen? Consider IELTS. Many candidates do their best speaking with a human in the room rather than a timer counting down on a monitor.
  • Writing is your weak point? Consider CELPIP's practical tasks (email + survey response) if formal essay structure isn't your strength. If you write well formally, IELTS's letter + essay is straightforward.
  • You need results fast? Computer-delivered IELTS or CELPIP both beat paper IELTS's 13-day wait.
  • You might apply outside Canada later? IELTS is recognized globally; CELPIP is essentially Canada-only.

One hard rule either way: all four abilities must come from one sitting of one test. You can't mix CELPIP listening with IELTS writing. If one skill falls short, you re-sit the entire test and pay the full fee again. (IELTS's One Skill Retake exists, but IRCC acceptance is limited — see our retakes article.)

What this means for your prep

Whichever test you choose, the prep logic is the same: CLB is scored on your weakest skill, so every practice loop should target the criteria holding you back, not the ones you're already good at. That's exactly how our practice tools work — per-criterion band estimates on speaking and writing, instant scoring on listening and reading, all labeled as estimates.

Still deciding? Practise a round on each skill here first — free, no account — and see where your real gaps are before you pay a test fee.

  • INTERNAL FLAG: draft-09 (retakes) presents One Skill Retake without the IRCC limitation; itciland cites IDP's Canadian immigration page limiting OSR acceptance to the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot, not standard Express Entry. Before publishing either article, verify current IDP/IRCC wording and add the caveat to draft-09 if it holds — draft-10 currently defers to the retakes article, so the two must agree at publish time.
