The core facts

  • IELTS Test Report Forms are valid for 2 years from the test date. This is the test partners' rule (IDP/British Council), and it propagates everywhere else.
  • IRCC requires your language test results to be valid at the time you submit your application — and less than 2 years old when you enter the pool too. For Express Entry: your profile needs valid results when you create it, and they must still be valid when your application for PR is received. If they expire between ITA and eAPR submission, the application can be refused.
  • The costly trap: applicants enter the pool with 20-month-old scores, get an ITA at month 21, gather documents for 60 days, and submit at month 22 — with expired language results. That means a refused application and the fee gone (or at best a scramble to re-test under the 60-day ITA clock).
  • The 2-year rule interacts with medicals (12 months) and police certificates — language results are often the longest-lived document, so they're the wrong thing to do "early." Strategy: get your ECA early, and take IELTS when you're 3–6 months from entering the pool, not a year out.
  • ITA's 60-day submission clock: if your scores are within ~2 months of expiry when the ITA arrives, plan a backup test date immediately — you cannot afford to discover the problem in week 6.
  • Score expiry vs. score improvement: many applicants retake IELTS to chase 8777 while their valid 6666 sits in the pool. Note the pool entry uses the best valid results; the retake only matters if it lands before ITA. Time-box the retake to 1–2 attempts, not an open-ended grind that lets the pool entry age out.
  • Provincial programs: OINP and other PNPs pull from the same Express Entry pool — same 2-year rule. For paper-based PNP streams, the nomination certificate itself has its own expiry (typically 6 months), which compounds the timing math.
  • TRV/study permit note: for SDS and study permits, language requirements differ and some streams accept different proof — don't assume PR rules carry over. Check the specific stream's page.

Timing it right

Fact-check anchor: 2-year validity from test date per test partners' TRF rules; IRCC requires results less than 2 years old at pool entry and at application (IRCC help centre); 60-day ITA submission window per IRCC — verify the current wording on the live IRCC pages before quoting.
