The rule in one line

For Express Entry and Canadian permanent residence, IRCC accepts only IELTS General Training. IELTS Academic does not count — at any score.

This is the most expensive clerical mistake in the language-test world: the two tests look identical when booking, they cost the same (~$360 CAD in Canada), and the wrong one is usually discovered after an invitation, when there is no time left to re-sit.

What IRCC's accepted list actually says

IRCC's language page for economic immigration accepts exactly five tests. On the English side:

TestAccepted by IRCC
IELTS General TrainingYes
IELTS AcademicNo
CELPIP-GeneralYes
CELPIP-General LSNo
PTE CoreYes

Each test's near-identical sibling is the one that doesn't count. And separately: IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted for Express Entry either — IRCC's official line is that it does not accept the One Skill Retake version of the IELTS General Training test (confirmed in our retake guide).

What each version is actually for

  • IELTS General Training — immigration, work visas, and work-related training. The Reading passages are everyday/workplace texts; the Writing Task 1 is a letter. This is the one your Express Entry profile wants.
  • IELTS Academic — university admission (undergraduate/postgraduate) and professional registration (nursing, engineering, medicine) where institutions require it. Canada has 75+ test centres in 40+ cities through IELTS.ca offering both versions, which is exactly why the booking dropdown matters.

So the decision is driven by the gate you're walking through: immigration → General Training; study → Academic. If your plan is "study first, then immigrate," you may eventually sit both — but only the General Training score goes into an Express Entry profile.

Three traps around this choice

1. "Academic sounds harder, so it must count for more"

Common reasoning, wrong outcome. IRCC does not award bonus points for Academic. A Band 8 in Academic for an immigration application is worth exactly nothing — the profile has nowhere to enter it.

2. Booking the wrong module on test day

When you book at a Canadian centre (IDP or British Council), the booking form asks which version. Re-check the confirmation email: it must say IELTS General Training. If it says Academic, fix it before the test date — rescheduling is cheaper than a wasted test.

3. Study-permit language requirements are a different game

Since SDS closed (Nov 2024), designated learning institutions set their own language bars, and schools typically ask for IELTS Academic, not General Training. Draft-04's correction holds here: if you're applying for a study permit, check the school's requirement — it may be the other version.

The two-year rule applies either way

Whatever you book, results must be less than two years old both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your PR application. Time your test so it doesn't expire mid-process — a retake inside the pool is a common self-inflicted wound.

Quick decision checklist

  • [ ] Applying for Express Entry, a PNP, or any economic PR stream → General Training
  • [ ] Applying to a Canadian university/college → ask the school; usually Academic
  • [ ] Professional registration (nursing etc.) → ask the regulator; usually Academic
  • [ ] Confirmation email says "General Training" (immigration) or "Academic" (study) — re-read it now

Bottom line

There is no "better" IELTS — there is only the one IRCC's system accepts. For immigration, that's General Training, not Academic, not One Skill Retake, under two years old. Get that right at booking, and the rest is just preparation.
