1. One test: CA$309–375
Re-verified Oct 2026 from live centre pages: British Council North Vancouver lists CAD 375; Toronto (George Brown) $360.00 all taxes included; Victoria lists CAD 309 (paper) / CAD 325 (computer); Montreal lists CAD 310 (paper); IDP aggregator band CAD 359–360. Say the range and name the mechanism: the fee is set by the local test centre, not a national list price.
2. The fee is the same no matter which flavour you pick
IELTS General Training costs the same as Academic. IDP and the British Council charge the same. Computer-delivered and paper-based cost the same. So "shop the provider for a discount" advice is dead air — the only real lever is the test centre and the province.
3. What the fee includes
One Test Report Form (TRF) for you plus up to ten free TRFs sent to institutions you nominate during registration — after the results release date, extra TRFs cost extra. Booking the wrong test format and re-sitting means paying the full fee again; there is no discount for repeaters.
4. The remark (Enquiry on Results)
CAD 165–290 in Canada depending on the centre (IDP Canada, 2026) — refunded in full only if your result is changed to a higher band score. EOR decision usually arrives in 2–21 days (centre EOR form notes), not the old 6–8-week figure some forums quote. The honest take: remarks help in Writing and Speaking where human examiners vary, almost never in Listening and Reading (machine-marked). A remark is cheaper than a retake but only if the shaky skill is a human-scored one; a Listening 6.5 never changes on remark.
5. Rescheduling costs money too
IDP's current published rules: free transfer 15+ days before the test, an admin fee of up to 25% of the fee for transfers 5–14 days out, and no transfer inside 4 days (treated as a cancellation); cancelling 15+ days out refunds 75% of the fee, inside 14 days nothing. Some Canadian centres still publish the older 5-week rule — check your own test centre's terms before booking. The mechanism: a panicked early booking burns money either way — pay again to re-sit, or pay the rescheduling penalty.
6. The retake math
- First sitting unprepared: $350 → misses CLB 9 by 0.5 in writing.
- Remark on the wrong skill (listening): ~$220, score unchanged → $570 total, still short.
- Second full sitting: $350 → $920 total, three months lost, and the ITA 60-day clock (see our score validity guide) may be ticking.
- The same $350 spent once, after a free diagnostic told you writing was the 0.5-band gap, plus a $4.99/month Founding plan: ~$355 total. The honest line: the expensive part of IELTS was never the test — it was the re-sits.
7. The hidden budget lines people forget
- WES/ECA educational credential assessment (the other mandatory PR cost — bigger than IELTS).
- Courier fees for paper TRFs to some bodies; transport to the test centre.
- Prep courses priced $500–2,000 with no pass guarantee.
- The biggest one — opportunity cost: each failed sitting costs 2–4 weeks of ITA/pool time.
8. When "cheap prep" is the trap
Free YouTube prep is fine for format familiarity but tells you nothing about your score; expensive coaching centers sell contact hours, not feedback. What actually prevents a retake: a scored mock that names the weakest skill and the exact band gap. Know your target before you book: the CLB converter confirms the band you need, the free diagnostic confirms whether you're there. Fact-check anchor: fee band CAD 309–375 from live centre pages Oct 2026; EOR CAD 165–290 (IDP Canada) with full refund only on score increase; IDP transfer/cancellation rules (15+ days free/75% refund, 5–14 days up to 25% admin fee); free-TRF rule confirmed on the Toronto centre page — centres set their own prices, so re-verify on the live pages before quoting.
