The 6.5 trap
Most IELTS General Training candidates aiming at CLB 9 — that's Writing 7.0 — don't stall at 5.5. They stall at 6.5. The essay feels good. The ideas are there. But the official score report never shows a per-criterion breakdown, so the real reason stays invisible.
Here's what the public band descriptors say, and what it means in plain terms: at Band 6 you are "competent but inconsistent" — you attempt complex sentences, you attempt less common vocabulary, you answer the task. At Band 7 you're "consistently controlled" — the task is fully addressed, most sentences are error-free, referencing is clean. The 6-to-7 gap is consistency and accuracy, not harder words or bigger ideas. Each of the four criteria counts equally, so one weak criterion drags the average down even when the other three are fine.
