1. Where the 20 points come from
In the CRS, "Spouse or common-law partner factors" are worth up to 40 points total: 10 for education, 20 for language (first official language), 10 for Canadian work experience. Language is the biggest slice, and unlike education it can be earned in weeks, not years.
The official-language rule: the spouse's IELTS General Training result is converted to CLB bands, and each of the four abilities scores independently. Unaccompanied spouse scores zero — you claim the points only if the spouse is coming to Canada.
2. The spouse language table (CLB → CRS points per ability)
IRCC's equivalency for spouse factors:
| Spouse CLB | CRS points per ability |
|---|---|
| 4 or below | 0 |
| 5 or 6 | 5 |
| 7 or 8 | 5 |
| 9 or higher | 5 |
The critical detail: every ability at CLB 5 or above is worth the full 5 points. There is no bonus for CLB 9. Four abilities × 5 points = 20 points maximum, achievable entirely at CLB 5.
3. What CLB 5 means in IELTS General Training scores
CLB 5 is a modest target — most functional English speakers can reach it with a short, targeted prep:
| Ability | IELTS GT band needed for CLB 5 |
|---|---|
| Listening | 5.0 |
| Reading | 4.0 |
| Writing | 5.0 |
| Speaking | 5.0 |
Compare that to CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 across the board) and CLB 9 (Listening 8.0 / Reading 7.0 / Writing 7.0 / Speaking 7.0). The spouse needs roughly Band 5 — not the Band 7+ grind the principal applicant faces. Reading is the cheapest ability at GT: CLB 5 needs only a 4.0 in GT Reading.
4. What 20 points actually buys you
In recent Express Entry draws, cutoffs move in bands of roughly 5–10 points. Twenty points is:
- The difference between receiving an ITA and sitting in the pool for six more months.
- Roughly equivalent to a one-year Canadian post-secondary diploma's CRS contribution in spouse factors terms.
- Worth more than a CLB 9→CLB 10 jump in the principal applicant's own language scores (which maxes out).
If your profile is within 20 points of the cutoff, the spouse's test is the highest-ROI action available to you. Even one ability at CLB 5 (5 points) is worth doing.
5. The principal-applicant switch: test both, pick the higher scorer
Many couples nominate the wrong principal applicant out of habit. The winning move:
1. Both partners take the GT IELTS. You can only compare once both have scores. 2. Run both as the principal applicant in the CRS calculator — language points, age, education all shift. 3. The higher scorer becomes the principal applicant; the other becomes the accompanying spouse, and their CLB 5+ result adds up to 20 points on top.
Age works against the older partner; language works for whichever partner tests better. You cannot know without two tests.
6. The prep math: who should study what
Because every ability is worth the same 5 points, the spouse should attack the weakest abilities first — the goal is crossing CLB 5 in each, not excelling anywhere.
- Typical fastest path: Reading (only needs 4.0 GT — many candidates clear this with 3–4 weeks of timed section practice) and Speaking (a 5.0 is a conversational level; Part 1 and Part 2 drills carry it).
- Typical trap: spending two months pushing Writing from 5.0 toward 6.5 when the fourth ability at 5.0 would score the same 5 points for a fraction of the effort.
Set a hard rule: once each ability crosses its CLB 5 threshold, stop optimizing and book the test.
7. Timing with IRCC's 2-year test validity
IELTS results are valid for Express Entry for two years from the test date. Coordinate both tests inside a narrow window so neither expires before the ITA:
- Test both partners within the same month.
- Do not test 18 months before you are ready to submit — a stale result means re-sitting under pressure.
- After an ITA, you have 60 days to submit with valid test results in hand.
The bottom line
The principal applicant chases CLB 9. The spouse chases CLB 5. Four modest results, 20 CRS points, and the cost of one more test booking. In a points race, the partner who never tested is the most expensive thing in your profile.
