Title: "Listening and Reading: the 0.5-band mistakes costing you CLB 9"

Angle: Everyone obsesses over Speaking and Writing, but Listening/Reading are the cheapest 0.5 bands in the test — 40 questions each, fully objective scoring, and most lost points come from avoidable mechanical errors, not English ability. For Express Entry, CLB 9 needs Listening 8.0 and Reading 7.0 — half a band short in either one drops you to CLB 8 and costs CRS points.

The math that matters

  • Listening and Reading each have 40 questions. One raw mark can be the difference between 7.5 and 8.0.
  • Approx. raw-score bands (check current IDP/BC tables before publishing): Listening 8.0 ≈ 35–36/40; 7.0 ≈ 30–31/40. Academic Reading 7.0 ≈ 30–32/40. So a 5-question swing is a full band in Listening.
  • CLB 9 threshold: Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0. Missing either by 0.5 = CLB 8 in that skill.
