Why Listening 8.0 decides CLB 9

Express Entry's CLB 9 (the tier that maximises language CRS points) requires Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0. Notice the asymmetry: listening demands the highest band of the four. A candidate with 7.0/7.0/7.0/7.0 has CLB 8, not CLB 9 — and that single listening band is worth 8 CRS points by itself (first-language CLB 8 pays 23 points per ability; CLB 9 pays 31).

Band 8.0 in Listening means 35–36 correct out of 40. That allows only 4–5 wrong answers across the whole test. It is not a "just listen carefully" exercise — it's a precision drill where careless, predictable errors (spelling, distractors, word limits) cost more marks than genuine comprehension gaps.
