Every Canadian program has a different IELTS bar — here's the real one
"How much IELTS do I need for Canada?" has no single answer. Each immigration program sets its own minimum in CLB terms, and your IELTS bands map to CLB skill by skill. Minimums get you into the pool; your CRS score gets you invited. Never confuse the two.
Express Entry programs: the minimums
| Program | Language minimum | In IELTS bands |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) | CLB 7, all 4 abilities | 6.0 in Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening |
| Canadian Experience Class (CEC), TEER 0/1 jobs | CLB 7, all 4 abilities | 6.0 in each |
| Canadian Experience Class (CEC), TEER 2/3 jobs | CLB 5, all 4 abilities | Reading 5.0, Writing 5.0, Speaking 5.0, Listening 6.0 |
| Federal Skilled Trades (FST) | CLB 5 speaking & listening; CLB 4 reading & writing | Speaking 5.0, Listening 6.0, Reading 4.5, Writing 4.0 |
Notes:
- FSW adds a second hurdle: at least 67 out of 100 on the six selection
factors, separate from CRS.
- CEC needs 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience in the last 3 years
(TEER 0–3) — no education or funds requirement.
- FST needs 2 years of trade experience in the last 5 years plus a valid
1-year job offer or certificate of qualification.
PNP: it depends on the stream
Provincial Nominee Programs set their own language floors, and they vary widely:
- Express Entry-aligned PNP streams inherit the federal program's
minimum (usually CLB 7 = IELTS 6.0 each).
- Base PNP streams are often lower: many accept CLB 4–5, and some
employer-driven streams go lower still for in-demand trades. Always check the specific stream's guide — "PNP" alone tells you nothing about the IELTS bar.
Study permit: the rules changed — SDS is gone
The Student Direct Stream (SDS), with its hard "6.0 in each band" rule, was closed permanently on November 8, 2024. Under the standard stream, IRCC does not set an IELTS cutoff — your college or university (DLI) sets the requirement, and it's usually one of these:
- Colleges / polytechnics: typically 6.0–6.5 overall, no band below 6.0
- Universities: often 6.5–7.5 overall, no band below 6.0–6.5
Practical truth: many visa officers still use the old SDS benchmark (6.0 each band) as an informal credibility reference. A 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 reads stronger than a bare 6.0 with a 5.0 in Writing — even without the SDS label.
Two rules that trip everyone up
1. Tests expire. Express Entry needs results from within the last 2 years. A great score from 2022 is worthless today. 2. CLB applies skill by skill. Your overall IELTS average is irrelevant: each of the four skills maps to its own CLB level, and the program minimum applies to each one.
What to do next
1. Find your target program's minimum from the tables above. 2. Run your bands through the free IELTS→CLB/CRS converter and see your CLB per skill and what the next level up earns you. 3. If any skill is below the bar, practise that one first — it's your bottleneck. Free AI-scored speaking and writing practice is a click away.
