The one number that matters: CLB 9 in all four skills

Express Entry's CRS grid pays per CLB level, per skill. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 across all four skills is worth +56 CRS points (no spouse) — often the difference between getting an Invitation to Apply and waiting another draw cycle.

Read the table as four copies: listening + reading + writing + speaking each earn the listed amount. Four skills at CLB 9, no spouse: 4 × 31 = 124 points. At CLB 8: 4 × 23 = 92. That 32-point gap is larger than most education or age differences.

Key trap: the overall CLB is the minimum of the four skills. Listening 8.0, reading 7.5, writing 7.0, speaking 6.5 → CLB 8, not 9. One weak skill drags the whole score. Fix the weakest skill first — a 6.5→7.0 speaking jump (CLB 8→9) is worth 8 CRS points for the cost of practice.

Why CLB 9 is the line everyone aims at

  • FSW eligibility: CLB 7 is the minimum for skilled-worker eligibility, but

eligibility ≠ invitation. Most draws clear well above.

  • Skill transferability bonus: CLB 9 + a post-secondary credential (or Canadian

work experience) unlocks up to 50 additional bonus points — CLB 8 does not.

  • Cost of missing it: a retake costs ~CAD 300+. Practising the weakest skill

to a 7.0 is cheaper than retaking the whole test at the wrong level.
